Gulf Breeze, FL

Gulf Breeze, FL Air Conditioning Repair & Service

History

Although Gulf Breeze has only been settled by civilians since the end of the 19th century, the city has a rich and unique history. In the 1820s, the U.S. Navy bought up a great deal of the surrounding area to ensure that it had a ready supply of timber for its ship-building program. This area now comprises the Gulf Islands National Seashore and the Naval Live Oaks Reservation. The U.S. Navy built several fortifications in this part of Florida during the ensuing decades, and the area played a decisive role in the Civil War’s naval skirmishes. Later, Gulf Breeze itself developed into an early-20th-century vacation town for middle-class families from across the South. The Gulf Breeze Historical Society works diligently to preserve distinctive housing and artifacts from this era.

Geography

Gulf Breeze is located near the western edge of the Florida panhandle at the mouth of Escambia Bay. The city sits on a long, narrow spit of land and boasts access to calm waters on three sides. It’s connected to the mainland by the Escambia Bay Bridge as well as Florida Highways 30 and 281. To the south, a narrow lagoon called English Navy Cove separates Gulf Breeze from the white-sand beaches of Santa Rosa Island and the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The center of Gulf Breeze is less than five miles from the center of Pensacola.

Population and Demographics

Gulf Breeze has a year-round population of about 6,000. Since the city and surrounding area are a popular destination for tourists and snowbirds, the region’s population swells a bit during the tourist season. Most year-round residents are retirees, service members and white-collar professionals who enjoy the city’s easy access to nearby military bases and business amenities. Families with small children are relatively rare here. However, many families use Gulf Breeze as a jumping-off point for trips to other parts of the Gulf Coast.

Things to Do in Gulf Breeze, Florida

Gulf Breeze entertains visitors and residents in a variety of ways. The unique Naval Live Oaks Reservation showcases an old-growth forest that supplied the U.S. Navy’s Civil War-era shipbuilding effort. To the south, Pensacola Beach and the Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier attract thousands of families with beautiful water views and a host of amenities. Meanwhile, Gulf Islands National Seashore offers top-notch hiking and bird-watching. For golfers, A.C. Read Golf Course and Pensacola Country Club offer varied greens, luxurious clubhouses and unmatched camaraderie.

Climate and Weather

Like the rest of Florida’s panhandle, Gulf Breeze has a subtropical climate that’s marked by four distinct but unequal seasons. Local winters tend to be short and relatively mild, but occasional cold snaps from the North American interior can lead to hard frosts that damage local crops and interrupt the tourism industry. During the transitional seasons, regular rainfall creates a lush landscape that appeals to residents and visitors alike. Although summers can be hot and humid, frequent thunderstorms tend to keep excessive heat at bay.
